POQUITO UNPACKING THE MEMORY JAR Tanya Montás Paris Books

Tanya Montas Paris’ “ever changing identity as she grew,” lives on the pages of Poquito and her collection of bits of many things cramped together inside a memory jar will bring joy to your heart. This bilingual collection has a fearlessness that evokes strong passionate memories in those of us who straddle the bicultural/ bilingual hemisphere. In My Accent she holds her temper when asked, Where is your accent from? But then unleashes her indigenous anger in the last line, “Or is it the voices of the Taínos under my tongue, silently sobbing as the savage Europeans raped the beautiful Quisqueya.” Montas Paris was born in Dominican Republic and in Entre Family she introduces her family, mother, papi, Tia Tatica. In Cat Eyes we view her green eyes. Abuelo Chano, her wise grandpa makes you laugh. He wisdom seldom disappoints. But Regrets will bring tears to your eyes.
Montas Paris takes nothing for granted. In No Soy La Babysitter and A Well Meaning Doctor she navigates the sea of prejudice and ignorance with punch and razor sharp humor. Hers is a irresistible voice that her intellect cannot resist. Poquito will make you weep and jump for joy.

POQUITO UNPACKING THE MEMORY JAR Tanya Montás Paris Books Reviews

This book is an inspiration. It makes us connect to who we really are, making us reflect on our own experiences, stories and dreams. Awesome Job!!!
Genuinely written and genuinely felt..Poquito brings exactly that; un poquito of everything through transparent story telling...laughter, tears, nostalgy, remembrance, hope...are just a few of the sentiments these pages brought to me... highly recommended!
This book brought me back to my golden childhood, I loved it from start to end. I laughed so much. So many memories that I can relate that are written in the real way, one of many of my favorite parts of this book. Loved it ! Five stars!!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of poems and vignettes, that provide a view into the author's vast life experiences, from her childhood in the Dominican Republic through her adulthood in Boston. Reading this book made me feel like I was having a cup of coffee with a friend, sharing tidbits of life, from awkward exchanges with doctors to the moments of fear when we think our child is in danger. I felt every emotion while reading, and savored them all.
I bought this book upon recommendation from a good friend but was not sure what to expect. I opened it late last nite to take a peek and couldn’t put it down. I was enchanted by Tanya’s spirit, honesty, humor and unique (yet universal) way of looking at life, love, family and friends. Her expressive writing style coupled with her imagination and connection to her heritage is heartfelt and delightful - i laughed and cried while reading. #feelgoodread.
Tanya's book is such an incredible treat. I sat down and read the entirety of Poquito in one setting--I laughed and cried and was nodding my head yes the whole time, and couldn't put it down. I teach recent immigrant students at a high school and hope all my students will read this book. It is a varied, funny, poignant assortment of poems and stories that help the reader understand what it means to be bicultural. Poquito is a wonderful celebration of family, marriage, identity, belonging, ethnicity, motherhood, the Dominican Republic--a beautiful tribute. Tanya captured clearly and simply so many universal feelings and themes in an easy-to-read collection. While the experiences she describes are uniquely hers, they certainly fully resonated with me as I think they will with all readers.
The snippets and vignettes in Poquito weave together brilliantly to make the author's trans-cultural life spring from the pages. Whether the stories make tears well in your eyes or smiles spread across your face, they all leave the reader curious, wondering and wanting more. Its richness in prose, raw emotion and messages of hope, love, and perseverance are rendered in few words, but the rewards for the reader are muchos! (L.C.)
