Pure fantasy and it transports the reader to a place far, far away and another time and place, just what it's suppose to do. Loved it.
Great Book.
I first learned of Jack Vance when I found my husbands book "Lyonesse Suldrun's Garden". After reading the first one, I had to read the others of the trilogy. Not a set that everyone would enjoy, but I definitely enjoyed them immensely.
If you are familiar with Jack Vance , you know how this first book of a trilogy will read. Vance is an expert at setting the pace and detailed in drawing his characters. He can make the most mundane observation entertaining, and tie it all together at another point in the story. While there is magic in this book, it is not that of a raging sorcerer that can kill anything it wants, or an all powerful warrior. This is a story that is driven by the characters, and like real life they have their own insecurities and problems. While there are powerful sorcerers in this book, they are all held, uneasily, in check by none other than Merlin himself, who keeps a tight rein on them all to prevent their talents from impacting the world in to great a fashion. If you have never read Jack Vance, it will take a little bit of time to get used to the writing style, which is unique among fantasy authors. Stick with it, you won't be disappointed.

This a classic story and mixes all kinds of narratives and points of view with a rich distinctive voice and vocabulary to make a truly magical story. Highly recommend it.
Jack Vances style is unique. You become fully absorbed in his characters like no other author. He paints a complete world full of sights, sounds, smell, taste and color that bring his books to life and towards the end of his career he produced the Lyonesse Trilogy which I personally consider his masterpiece. If you have not read him give this a try you will not be disappointed!
